BOTOX® falls under the category of a “neurotoxin.” When used in small, controlled doses, it can temporarily paralyze muscles, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, primarily in the face. It's commonly used for cosmetic purposes to smooth out wrinkles, but it also has medical applications, such as treating certain muscular conditions and migraines.

Good candidates for BOTOX® typically include individuals who:

1. Are in good overall health.
2. Have realistic expectations about the results.
3. Are bothered by the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, or frown lines.
4. Are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
5. Have no history of severe allergic reactions or sensitivity to botulinum toxin.
6. Are looking for a non-invasive way to address facial wrinkles.
7. Are willing to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by their healthcare provider.

What to do in order to prep for your BOTOX® appointment:
Approximately one week prior to your BOTOX® appointment, discuss any history of cold sores with your injector. Injectable treatments can sometimes trigger outbreaks, so if necessary, we may prescribe preventative antiviral medication. As your appointment approaches, it's important to avoid certain substances that could interfere with your results or exacerbate side effects:

• Refrain from using blood thinners such as NSAIDs (e.g., Advil, aspirin, Aleve) and fish oils for 3-5 days before your treatment. These medications can increase the risk of bruising and swelling post-BOTOX®. If you require pain relief, opt for Tylenol instead. Consult your doctor if you're on prescription blood thinners, as they may need to be paused for BOTOX®.
• To minimize the risk of bruising, abstain from alcohol consumption a few days before your BOTOX® injections.
• Pause your retinol regimen two days prior to your BOTOX® appointment.

On the day of your treatment, it's advisable to have a nutritious breakfast to ensure your body is functioning optimally, which can help mitigate potential side effects. Eating beforehand can also help prevent lightheadedness during the injections.

After your BOTOX® treatment, adhere to the following guidelines to support proper aftercare and enhance your results:

What is the typical duration for BOTOX® to take effect?
BOTOX® may require up to 2 weeks to fully take effect, inhibiting muscle movements responsible for wrinkles. However, many patients notice some improvement within a week.

How can I determine if I require a BOTOX® touch-up?
Experienced injectors engage in thorough discussions with you prior to treatment, aiming to provide a realistic understanding of your anticipated BOTOX® outcomes. If the desired results aren't apparent after 2 weeks, reach out to your injector to explore the option of a touch-up. It's plausible, particularly for new patients, that more BOTOX® units were necessary than initially estimated, considering individual anatomy and muscle strength. Most injectors are willing to assist in such cases.
